How To Clean A Chromebook
If you own a chromebook and have stumbled across this article, then you’re probably wondering how to clean a Chromebook.
Chromebooks are popular because they keep things simple and give you access to a computer that prioritises the internet and browsing. The lightweight design makes them highly portable, which means they are exposed to extra dirt.
If your screen is showing signs of dust and fingerprints, then it is highly likely that it is time to give your whole Chromebook a clean. You will not only end up with a shiny looking machine, but you will get rid of the bacteria that are lurking on your keyboard.
Cleaning is essential for any laptop as dust accumulates in the vents, which can prevent airflow and cause overheating. Chromebooks are especially vulnerable as they have no fans so dust can cause a severe problem.
This guide will explain how to clean all the parts of your Chromebook.
Getting Started – How To Clean A Chromebook
Step 1: Make sure you power off your Chromebook completely rather than just letting it hibernate or sleep.
Step 2: Remove all your peripherals such as the mouse, keyboard, USB or external hard drives, power cable etc.
It is a good idea to clean your Chromebook in the order we describe to ensure you don’t spread dirt to previously cleaned areas.
You will need the following tools to clean your Chromebook:
- A blunt knife or screwdriver
- Compressed air
- Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
- A microfibre cloth
- A cotton bud
- Screen Cleaner
Cleaning a Chromebook’s Keyboard
Cleaning the keyboard is the most critical job. Crumbs, dirt, and bacteria lurk beneath the keys, often causing them to stick or not perform well. There is also a matter of hygiene with germs being spread easily between users.
Removing the keys may seem a little scary for novices, but it is the only way to remove debris lodged underneath.
Step 1: Use a small amount of alcohol on your microfibre cloth to clean the keys on your keyboard. A microfibre cloth is non-abrasive and will not scratch off the markings.
Step 2: Use the cloth in a circular motion over each individual key. If any keys are particularly dirty, you can use a firmer touch or use the cotton bud to work around the keys. You may notice that some dirt falls into the cracks but don’t worry at this stage.
Step 3: Give the keys time to air dry.
Step 4: Use your blunt knife or screwdriver to remove debris from any particularly dirty keys. You can remove the keys one at a time with your tool to get underneath and set them aside safely. You insert the instrument at an angle and scoop out the key. Take care not to cause damage to the chips below the keys.
Step 5: Use the compressed air and gently spray in the empty key spaces. It is best to hold the spray at an angle to remove the debris.
Step 6: Finally, you can put the keys back in place. They should snap back into position, but you should not use too much force.
Cleaning a Chromebook’s Trackpad
The trackpad will probably be dirty and covered in germs like the keyboard.
Step 1: Use a little isopropyl alcohol on your microfibre cloth.
Step 2: Wipe the cloth gently in a circular motion across the pad. It will click if you are using the right amount of pressure.
Step 3: Air dry the trackpad. Avoid wiping it dry as it will leave marks.
Cleaning a Chromebook’s USB, power, headphone, and other ports
All the ports on your Chromebook will attract dust and debris because of the heat generated. Although it isn’t a significant problem, you don’t want to compromise or damage any connections.
Step 1: Add some isopropyl alcohol to your microfibre cloth.
Step 2: Now, use your compressed air to spray into the ports. You may see some debris fall out.
Step 3: You can use the damp cloth to wipe around the port to remove the loosened particles but do NOT put the damp cloth inside the ports as it may cause damage to the electrical connections.
Step 4: Air dry the ports.
Cleaning the Vents on a Chromebook
Cleaning the vents is one of the essential parts of your clean up on a Chromebook, as dust that accumulates here can lead to overheating. As your Chromebook has no fan, it relies on natural cooling, and any blockages to the airflow could prevent the ventilation required.
Step 1: Add some Isopropyl alcohol to your microfibre cloth.
Step 2: Use your compressed air to spray into the vents to disturb any dust or debris gathered there.
Step 3: Use your damp cloth to wipe away any debris.
Cleaning a Chromebook’s lid and body
The outer casing of your Chromebook is likely to get marked with smears and dirt depending on how careful you are with using and storing it. Regular cleaning can keep it looking good.
Step 1: Add some isopropyl alcohol to the microfibre cloth. Don’t be tempted to use too much as it can cause internal damage if it drips into the seams.
Step 2: Wipe the damp cloth over the surface of the Chromebook. Focus on the lid, bezel and body. If it is filthy, you may find that there is also some debris. Remove this carefully with the microfibre cloth, so you don’t cause any scratching to the surfaces.
Step 3: Allow the Chromebook to air dry.
Cleaning the screen of a Chromebook
Do not be tempted to use household cleaners, glass cleaners or water to clean your screen. You could cause damage to the screen and leave smears across the surface.
If you have a touchscreen Chromebook, it will probably be extra dirty with fingerprints and smudges, but you must take particular care not to cause damage while cleaning it.
Choose a cleaning solution that is designed for monitors or laptop screens. They are readily available to buy in shops or online and often come as a complete kit with a special cloth. If not, then you can use a clean microfibre cloth.
Follow the manufacturer instructions on your chosen screen cleaner to ensure you get the best streak-free finish.
Always avoid using excessive force when cleaning the screen as you can easily cause damage.
